Our History
Connex Credit Union has been active in the community since 1940, when it was chartered to serve SNET employees and their families in the greater New Haven area. At that time, the credit union was known as New Haven Telephone Employees Federal Credit Union. Through the mid-1990s, we expanded our affiliation to include more than 450 companies and organizations. Until recently, only employees of these select organizations and their families were eligible to join.
In December 2002, our credit union received approval to convert from a federal to a community-based state charter. This means that anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in New Haven, Hartford, Middlesex or Fairfield Counties is now eligible to join.
On June 16, 2003, Southern New England Financial Credit Union (SNEFCU) officially changed its name to Connex (pronounced "Connects") Credit Union to reflect the conversion to a community-based, state chartered credit union. The name change made it clear to Connecticut residents that they no longer had to be employed by SNET in order to become a member. The name also conveys our ongoing commitment to connect with new members, while maintaining our strong connections with current members. The Connex name differentiates us from other financial institutions, while reinforcing our local roots (Conn is the first four letters of Connex and Connecticut.)
Although the name has changed, Connex Credit Union will continue to serve its members as a trusted provider of competitively priced financial products and services. Connex has eight conveniently located branches in Branford, Guilford, Hamden, Meriden, Monroe, New Haven, North Haven, and Orange. Connex offers free Online Banking and Mobile Banking, as well as low fees and very competitive rates on loans, mortgages and deposit products.
